Frequently Asked Questions about Electronic Collection Events

What measures are being taken in light of the COVID-19 pandemic?

Macon County Environmental Management has received guidance from the Macon County Health Department on how to hold these public collection events as safely as possible. With that in mind we ask that you do the following when participating in a collection event:

Do not exit your vehicle. This is for your safety, the safety of staff, and to keep the flow of traffic moving. Always come to a complete stop and put your vehicle in park when stopping to speak with the event greeter and drop-off accepted items.

Please wear a facial covering or mask when speaking with our staff. Our staff will be wearing facial coverings/masks for your protection, as well as our own. Please do not roll down your window completely. In order to speak with the event greeter or staff, please only roll your window down a few inches to communicate and follow any instructions given to you at that point. This helps further shield both you and our staff. The event greeter will verify your name (or the name of the person who made the appointment, if the person delivering is not the same person), scheduled time for your appointment, and the items that you have to drop-off, as well as inquire where the accepted items are located in your vehicle for our staff to unload.

We ask that you stay in your vehicle and allow our staff to unload all items from your vehicle.

What items will be accepted at the collection event?

Up to 7 residential electronic items will be accepted per confirmed registrant, including:

Televisions & monitors ($10 each – must be intact & without broken glass)
Computers, laptops, printers & peripherals
Control boxes, receivers, consoles & controls for games, satellite & cable TV boxes, media players & recorders, etc.
Phones, tablets & accessories
Cables & rechargeable batteries

How should I load my vehicle for the collection?

In order to expedite unloading, please pack your items loosely in your vehicle without packaging, boxes or containers. We ask that your items be placed in the trunk or bed of your vehicle if possible to comply with social distancing measures. Please stay in your vehicle and allow our staff to unload all items from your vehicle.

Will someone help me unload my vehicle?

During our small-scale Electronics Collections at the Recycling Center, staff will be available to help unload. Under normal circumstances, for items such as large TVs we would ask that you bring additional help to unload. At this point in time, please stay in your vehicle and allow our staff to unload all items from your vehicle.

Will the event be altered in the event of inclement weather?

The threat or presence of inclement weather, such as persistent rain, lightning or high winds, may cause the event to be delayed, temporarily suspended or cancelled. Weather forecasts are closely monitored when scheduled events are near and if there is a high likelihood that unfavorable conditions will be occurring during the scheduled collection time efforts will be made to contact you of any changes or cancellations. Can I change or cancel my appointment time or selection of number of TVs/monitors?

Appointments may be revised or cancelled by emailing environmentalmanagement@co.macon.il.us or by calling 217-425-4505 during regular business hours (Monday – Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.). Please review the cancellation/refund policy below.

What is your cancellation/refund policy?

Refunds will be issued to registrants in each of the following circumstances:

  1. If a collection event is cancelled and the registrant does wish to reschedule for a future collection in the same fiscal year;
  2. The registrant cancels and then makes a second payment (of equal or greater value) when registering for a new appointment;
  3. The registrant cancels at least three days prior to the close of registration.

Is proof of reservation required for admittance?

The event greeter will ask to see your confirmation of registration, such as a print-out of your confirmation email, a screen view of your confirmation email on your mobile device or your confirmation postcard.

Where can I recycle electronics besides the collection?

With the exception of TVs and CRT monitors, most consumer electronic devices may be dropped off on a daily basis, free of charge, for recycling at participating retailers. Click here, for more information about recycling programs with local retailers.
